A tiny number of animals manage to escape from zoos and safari parks every year—and it can happen to the best of them.

Here's how these animals pull off their daring escapes.

Animals don't just flee when they escape from captivity. They make careful plans and often use surprising tactics to get away. In fact, a microscopic number of these animals manages to escape the statistic every year—sometimes in adventurous ways. During the 2021 I traveled across the country talking to zookeepers, animal trainers, and security experts to learn more about how animals escape and what can be done to prevent it.

The objective of the Animal Escape Preparedness Plan separate document is to develop best practices, tools, training, and drills to prepare staff so they are ready to respond effectively to an animal escape.

It is rare, but sometimes with the best intentions, facilities and training animals do escape from zoos and safari parks—and it can happen to anyone.

An animal incident—the escape of an animal from its habitat or an unplanned dangerous animal encounter—can range from a minor nuisance such as a bird flying out of an open door to a major incident such as a large carnivore escaping from its enclosure.
